Fernando Casamayor Molina is a PhD candidate in Islamic Architecture and Archaeology at Harvard University. He holds a BA in Archaeology and a MRes in Islamic Archaeology, both from the University of Durham. He has participated in various archaeological excavations in Spain, Italy, England, Turkey, Tunisia and the West Bank.
His research focuses on the Abbasid landscape in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between urban planning, architecture, and power structures. Using spatial methods and quantitative analysis, he explores how the built environment reflects dynamics of inequality, processes of state formation, and mechanisms of social control.
