Jesús Martínez Fernández completed his Master of Arts in Egyptology at the University of Leiden in 2014 carrying out a research stay in Egypt at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC). He subsequently completed a Master's degree in Classical Archaeology at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili/Institut Català d'Arqueologia Clàssica in 2015.
He finally obtained his PhD in Classical Archaeology at the same institution in 2021, as a member of the Landscape Archaeology Research Group of the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (GIAP-ICAC), thanks to a FI-AGAUR predoctoral contract financed by the Generalitat de Catalunya. His research allowed him to develop methodologies of landscape and archaeomorphological analysis, especially in periods of historical transition. This allowed him to study the evolution of the landscape and historical road traces in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, especially from Roman times to the High Middle Ages.
Within the Landscape Archaeology Research Group (GIAP-ICAC) he has actively participated as a member in different R&D research projects such as Transported Mediterranean Landscapes: an integrated analysis of longterm land-use dynamics at both sides of the Mediterranean (TransLands). In these projects he has carried out fieldwork (surveying and excavation) and archaeological research in high mountain areas, specializing in archaeomorphological analysis, remote sensing methodologies and photogrammetry work, among other spatial techniques. This archaeological experience has been developed through continuous participation in different international archaeological projects throughout Spain and Italy over the last 13 years.
Currently, he focuses his research on the evolution of the fluvial landscape of the Theban area from the pharaonic period to the present, within the Middle Kingdom Theban Project under the direction of Dr. Antonio J. Morales Rondán (UAH).
